Senate News Update
From Senator Jane Earll
October 7, 2008
Energy Efficiency = Savings and Warmth
This winter, unfortunately, is not going to give us a break from high
fuel costs, but we can all take some quick, easy and commonsense energy
conservation steps to help keep our heating bills down.
By having someone inspect indoor and outdoor heating oil tanks and
lines or gas equipment for potential problems and practicing energy
conservation at home, you can better manage your utility bills,
particularly with the price of heating fuels expected to rise
significantly this summer.
Homeowners who use oil heat should do visual inspection of the tank
and lines leading to it to look for signs of rusting or leaks. Problems
should be reported to the oil company and corrected by a professional.
Consumers with natural gas heating systems to also have their systems
checked for leaks. Recent home energy audits conducted by the nonprofit
Energy Coordinating Agency found virtually every home with natural gas
heat it inspected had leaks, some homes as many as eight.
Other simple and commonsense improvements homeowners can make
include:
- Sealing and insulating, usually starting with the attic;
- Installing a programmable thermostat;
- Upgrading the heating system;
- Replacing old appliances with high-efficiency ENERGY STAR units;
- Switching to energy-efficient lighting;
- Installing storm windows and heavy curtains or shades; and
- Replacing or add energy-efficiency features to a home's water
heater
The Pennsylvania Weatherization Assistance Program offers help to
increase the energy efficiency of dwellings occupied by low-income
residents, helping to reduce their energy costs while safeguarding their
health and safety.
This program prioritizes low-income residents at higher risk
including older adults, individuals with disabilities, and families with
children.

We can't do anything about the weather, especially in the Great Lakes
region. It's going to be cold, but taking proactive steps can help you
to stay warm and reduce energy costs.
As always, if you have questions on this or any state government
matter, please do not hesitate to call my office at 814-453-2515.
